Served in the Royal Navy in WW1 and from 1935 was attached to the National Physical Laboratory. He was experienced in mine warfare and in 1939 was recalled to serve at HMS Vernon with special responsibilities for mine disposal and for counter measures as RN Chief Petty Officer (C/J18204). He then lived at 19 Holmes Road, Twickenham.
He was killed on 23rd January 1941 at Flanborough, East Riding of Yorkshire when the fuse and detonator from a washed-up mine exploded in his jacket pocket when he slipped and fell.on an icy pavement.
